Sun-Safe Swimming: SLIP, SLOP, SLAP, SLIDE & SIP!

Summer days and swimming go hand in hand, but strong UV rays can turn a fun session into a sunburn disaster if we’re not careful. Staying sun safe isn’t about being strict—it’s about building small, easy habits that protect the whole family.

Slip on the Right Gear

UV-protective rashies, and UV swim hats for little ones offer reliable, all-day protection that doesn’t wash off. The more covered the skin is, the better!

Slop on Protection That Lasts

Pick a high-quality SPF 50+ sunscreen that’s made for water play. Look for “4 hours water resistant” on the label. Apply generously (most people don’t use enough) and give it time to soak in before anyone jumps in ( at least 20 minutes before sun exposure).

Slap on a Hat

Kids spend time out of the water too! Whether you're poolside, playing cricket on the grass, or building sandcastles at the beach, a wide-brimmed hat during breaks—snacks, warm-ups, or waiting turns—keeps their face and neck shielded from direct sun.

Slide into Some Shade

Create a shaded zone with a shade sail if your pool doesn’t have natural cover, or an umbrella if you can't find shade wherever you might be. A few minutes in the shade helps cool the body, prevent dehydration, and reduce overall UV exposure.

Sip, Sip, Sip!

Sun safety isn’t just about the skin. Staying hydrated helps the body cope with heat. Keep water bottles nearby and encourage swimmers to take regular drink breaks.

Set Smart Swim Times

UV levels peak in the middle of the day. If possible, aim for early morning or late afternoon sessions—cooler, safer, and often more enjoyable.

Sun safety doesn’t have to interrupt the fun. These simple habits help families enjoy the water with confidence, comfort, and care. Let the good times roll—safely!
